LETTERS TO GOODNEWS

Dear Goodnews

What do I do with all my Christian books and tapes? Two friends who are nicely over 40 asked me the same question. They like many have family who are not interested in the library of material they have collected over the years and I know myself charity shops aren’t interested in sackfuls of Christian material.

One of my friends, a teacher never gets into this situation because she simply passes on books as soon as she has read them but most people I suspect, aren’t that detached and end up with more than they want.

Perhaps parishes would like to start libraries and would thus be happy to receive these books and tapes or maybe at the summer conferences there could be a table of “seconds” whereby people could be charged £1 or 50pence an item, which could then be donated to the conference or some other charity. I remember being at one gathering where there was a box of old tapes on a table, which simply said “Help yourself!” What about Days of Renewal in various parts of the country having a second hand section? New people are always hungry for literature, not only the latest title or cassette. There are those who can’t afford £10 for a book but would be prepared to pay £1 to be fed.

Do people have any other ideas?

Jacqui, London

Editor’s note: This is an ongoing problem which I am sure many people would like to see solved. One of the difficulties is that of storage and transportation as most days of renewal and conferences are held on rented premises and it needs someone to store the material and transport it. This could be a very valuable ministry, however, for someone prepared to take it on. Likewise many English speaking people overseas are looking for good Christian literature and would be happy to receive books and tapes, but it can be exhorbitant to send them. If there are people in this country who send regular shipments to the missions and would like to receive books and tapes they should write to Goodnews and we will let our readers know.
