New Dawn in Scotland
NEW CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC FAMILY CONFERENCE
This year the first New Dawn in the Church in Scotland,
will take place at Madras College in St Andrews from 5th-9th July. It
has long been the dream of Douglas and Margaret Hunter to bring what
they had experienced at the New Dawn conference in Walsingham home to
Scotland. Douglas comments, There is always a coachload of pilgrims
from Scotland who go to Walsingham every year, but not everyone who
would like to go, can afford it, so it has always been our ambition
to hold something here ourselves, but with the same spirit as New Dawn.
They feel they have found the ideal location in St Andrews, more
famous for its university and golf course.
The
ancient town has remarkable parallels with Walsingham. It was a pilgrimage
centre for centuries and pilgrims came from all over Europe to visit
the relics of St Andrew and visit the church of St Mary on the Rock.
The town also boasted the biggest cathedral in Britain after Norwich.
All this, however, was destroyed during the Reformation when even the
remembrance of these days was airbrushed out of local history. Although
there had long been the desire for a Scottish New Dawn, the impetus
this year came from a prophetic word received at the Scottish national
shrine to Our Lady at Carfin. Every month for the last seven years the
Tent of Divine Mercy has been meeting here for prayer and praise and
healing.
When it began, says Douglas, there was only about twenty
or so people who came, but the group stayed faithful. Two years ago,
however, the organizing team felt led to be more open to the prophetic
word, and to increase the emphasis on personal prayer ministry and praying
over people for a new anointing and empowerment in the Holy Spirit.
As a result the numbers coming soared, and now they regularly get 150
or so people each month. There are many healings and conversions. One
man, says Douglas, a bus driver of one of the coaches, intrigued at
what was going went up for prayer. To his amazement he was slain in
the spirit and was shaking all over. Afterwards he told Douglas that
everything wrong in his body was put right. So many people rest in the
spirit at the meeting says Douglas, that the gatherings often look like
a war zone with bodies lying all over the place.
This restoration of signs and wonders, has drawn more
and
more people to come, and it was twice at a ministry meeting
for the gathering that the word came to start a New Dawn in
Scotland. Following an evening of discernment an organizing
team of three priests and three lay people was formed and
a special Trust Wells Springs of Hope set up to support
the conference. The team apart from Douglas and his wife
Margaret, include Canon Willie Fraser, the chaplain of Craig
Lodge, and the parish priest behind the setting up the Living
Waters Youth Ministry. The other two priests are Fr Keith
Hereira from Aberdeen and Fr John Keenan, the Glasgow
university chaplain, and Margaret Duncan, a well known
speaker and writer from Aberdeen.
For Douglas the timing has been perfect, as he has just
reached retirement age and thus qualifies for a state pension. He comments,
This means that I dont have to worry about my business,
which has been falling off recently anyway, but I can concentrate totally
on working for the conference. Before I wouldnt have had the necessary
time to dedicate to it. He has been amazed at the ways that doors
have opened providentially and volunteers have come forward or resources
been donated to help bring things about. Door after door has just
opened. It has been incredible.
Saundra Storch has been elected
the new chairwoman of the DST for CCR in Menevia. She has taken
over from Frances Graham who is the current chairwoman of the NST for
Wales.
Welsh leaders Attend Charism School.
Over 30 members of the Welsh NSC and DSTs including some prayer
group leaders and members attended the Charism school led by Damian
Stayne at the Cor et Lumen Christi Community in Chertsey in February
2010. Sheila Smith, one of the group, was healed of deafness and Mona
Kruppa, another in the party, was healed of cataracts and hearing problems.
Cardiff News: New Prayer Team
Following the Charism school, the Cardiff DST is developing of a Prayer
Ministry team in the diocese. Led and Chaired by Fr Gareth Leyshon the
team may be used in the DSTs monthly praise Masses as well as
other events in the area. St Davids Cathedral Charismatic Fellowship
in Cardiff has received the green light to run monthly Penitential Healing
Services at the Cathedral with an outreach potential. Stations of the
Cross in city centre. The Legion of Mary, supported by the Sisters of
Charity and members of local charismatic prayer groups, witnessed to
their faith by praying the Stations of the Cross in Cardiffs busy
high street shopping centre. About 60 Catholics processed along the
street, milling together with the 80,000 fans who had come to watch
Wales play Italy on Rugby International Day.
The day began with prayers at St Davids Cathedral.
Then led by a Cross bearer, the group processed down Queen Street, stopping
along the way for prayers to be said, scriptures to be read and hymns
to be sung. Leaflets too were handed out to the general public. This
caused a mixed and surprised reaction by many, who are not familiar
with Catholics taking to the streets in Cardiff.
NEW SEASON OF MIRACLES
Damian Stayne said he was incredibly moved at the healings
he witnessed earlier in the year at the New Dawn conference in Uganda,
where he and Duncan Mitchell, also from Cor Lumen Christi community
were ministering.

Lame child walks - Uganda
Apart from over 100 people being healed of deafness,
12-
15 people on crutches were healed. One old man had paid
thousands of Ugandan shillings to a witchdoctor and stayed
with him a week, with no change, but at a Word of Command,
at the miracle service, the man was instantly set free and was
able to walk. Another man on wooden crutches, had been
attacked by burglars and had had his spine smashed. He had
been operated on, but without success, but he too was healed,
and sprinted round the field giving glory to God. Another little
three year old who had only been able to hobble, was able to
walk properly.
Damian commented, If you are lame in Africa it
is difficult to get married or get work. It also often means you would
have to beg by the side of the road all day unless you have a family
with money to support you, as there is no state help to support the
sick. These miracles mean that people dont just physically get
better but they get their lives back in a way we cant appreciate
in the West. Damian reckons that about 35,000 people have professed
physical healings at their events over the last seven years. In the
beginning, he said, they would interview everyone, because they were
so thrilled to see such powerful healings, but now because of the sheer
numbers healed they just will interview a few examples and get those
healed to give witness, because the calling of the community is to preach
the gospel and call to conversion and the healings are just part of
the signs and wonders that accompany the preaching of the Word, as promised
in the bible.
The community have produced a short DVD with a selection
of the healings they have filmed over the last five years, which they
often show at miracle rallies etc, to build up peoples faith.
This can be seen free on their internet site, and is also available
to buy for those wishing to show to others to encourage them in their
faith in miracles. (Contact Cor Lumen Christi 01932 565747).
Damian and Cor et Lumen Christi community over the last
10 years have been running The Charism School all over the
world, to train Catholics to minister in the gifts of the Holy Spirit
themselves. At the end of February, about 300 people from all
over the UK including a large group from Wales (see Welsh
news) and a group from Poland attended the first Charism
School in the UK for 3 years at the Salesian School in Chertsey
near where the community live.
Here Damian taught and exhorted people to grow in faith
and
gave them the opportunity to pray for words of knowledge for
people sitting near them. The majority of people had never
done this before and were amazed at what God revealed to
them as they prayed for people they didnt know. Fr Aidan
from the West country, who is not involved in the Charismatic
Renewal himself, came with 12 parishioners. He was so
touched personally by the healings of two of his group and the
words of prophecy that people received, that he spoke about it
at all the Masses in his parish when returned home.

SEEDS OF HOPE
New partnership between the Northern Catholic Conference
and Liverpool Hope University The Northern Catholic Conference,
now in its 6th year, was the inspiration of Frankie Mulgrew, a
young northern comedian, now studying for the priesthood. He had
attended both the New Dawn conference at Walsingham and Celebrate
family conferences, and inspired by what he saw wanted something
similar up north. Backed by local Catholic politician and activist,
Lord David Alton, and the legendary Liverpudlian priest Fr Jimmy
Collins, a committee was formed and the first conference took
place at Adelphi hotel in Liverpool. Since then the conference
has moved twice, once to the Floral Hall in Southport and then
last year to Liverpool Hope University, where it looks set to
stay. This year the conference will take place over the weekend
of 11th-13th June 2010.
Eighteen months ago a new team was put together
under the guidance of Fr Jimmy and Frankie Mulgrew, and last autumn
the team had a meeting with Professor Gerald Pillay, the vice-chancellor
and rector of the university. Apparently the Professor Pillay
had been so delighted by what had happened the year before, both
in numbers coming and the enthusiasm for the Catholic faith, that
he wanted the university to have a closer link with the conference.
He thus suggested that the university become the permanent home
of the conference and offered to help in its promotion as he felt
the presence of the conference enhanced the ethos of Hope as a
leading Faith Based University. ( Hope was the original site for
Training of Catholic teachers.) As well as encouraging students
to attend and be involved Professor Pillay has also offered generous
costings for the public rooms used and the participation of the
media staff of the university. As a result the conference are
able to charge young people wanting to attend a subsidized price
of only £40 full board (adults £110). Like New Dawn,
the conference is run on a donation to enable those on low incomes
to attend. Accommodation is limited and needs to be booked early.
Among the speakers this year is TV chef and author
Delia Smith, who is a devout Catholic. Comedian Jimmy Cricket,
who is Frankies father, is also a regular for the entertainment
night. There will be a childrens ministry on the Saturday
only but no crèche. Full details of the speakers and theme
are available on www.northerncatholic.co.uk. The web site has
been designed by Kristos Media (www.kristosmedia. org), who produce
websites on a donation only basis for Catholic parishes and charities.
As well as information about the conference there are also some
of the talks from last year. Application forms can be downloaded
from the web site or by writing to NCC, 22 Hill Rise View,Aughton,
Lancashire,L39 3RG.
Bookings are coming in very fast,
not just locally, but from all over the country. If you want to
attend I suggest you get on the phone or website straight away.

PENTECOST VIGIL AT KNOCK
Another initiative to help drawn attention
to the feast of Pentecost is a special
vigil being held at the National Marian
Shrine, Knock in Ireland, on the eve of
Pentecost (22nd May) at 9pm finishing
with Midnight Mass. The theme is A New
Pentecost for a New Evangelisation,
with the secondary theme of preparing
for the Eucharistic Congress which will
be held in Dublin in June 2012. The
Pentecost Event is being organized by
the St Michaels Prayer group in Sligo,
the St Marys on the Hill, Adoration
Group, Glengormley, Northern Ireland
and the Irish School of Evangelisation
[ISOE] based in Dublin headed up by
Joe OCallaghan.
Each of the three
groups will take responsibility for the
content of one hour of the programme.
Joe OCallaghan sees the event as being
timely, and a way of drawing the people
of Ireland back to the essentials and to
pray at this time when the faith of many
has been rocked by the recent scandals.
He comments, It is in returning to Jesus
that we will discover the answer to all
our problems. Joe is also helping to run
some Life in the Spirit seminars over the
Easter to Pentecost period at his home
parish in Johnstown, Killiney, Co Dublin.
An eighth seminar has been added to
the standard seven on the importance
of evangelization.
Joe comments, This
is to help remind people that the new
life that we have been given is not only
for ourselves. It must overflow [Kenosis
in Greek] in evangelization. Charismatic
Renewal exists to evangelise Joe is a
full time lay missionary with his wife,
Jean, but this is the first time he says
that they have had the opportunity to
hold seminars in their home parish. Joe
comments, I believe that this year Jesus
is passing by our parish in a special way
to give us New Life in the Spirit. The
key to this he says is the openness of
his parish priest Fr Peadar Murney, who
has been very supportive. Fr Peadar has
seen the benefit of the CCR and there is
a great sense of expectation about the
seminars.

CATHOLIC VOICES SPEAKING UP FOR THE FAITH
Please pray for a wonderful initiative by Austen
Ivereigh, Kathleen Griffin and Jack Valero, three Catholics involved
in the media. Realising that the papal visit will cause the Catholic
Church and its teaching to be brought under the media spotlight,
the trio have set up Catholic Voices under the auspices of the
Catholic Union. The majority of the recruits to Catholic Voices
are aged 25-40 and from a variety of professions and backgrounds.
They are presently undergoing special media and theological training,
so that they will be able to speak about their faith and the Catholic
viewpoint on the various issues that are likely to come up during
the popes visit. Meeting fortnightly, the 24 volunteers
are being given briefings by experts and the opportunity to role
play, and practice taking part in panel discussions and interviews
on hot topics. These include things such as on the tension between
homosexual rights and freedom of religious belief, which caused
the end of the Catholic adoption societies. Other topics include
euthanasia, abortion and sexual ethics. Kathleen, emphasized to
those taking part that the way they put their case was just as
important as what they said, and that sometimes Christians could
come across as aggressive or smug and alienate the listener by
their manner. Premier Christian Radio are lending their facilities
to the group to practice interview techniques for tv and radio.
Among those taking part is Fiona OReilly from Soul Food.
Please pray that these volunteers will be able to witness in such
a way that those who listen will be touched by the beauty and
truth of Catholic teaching, and that they will be given an opportunity
to do this.

Miracle Rally
Cor Lumen Christi are holding their 5th Catholic
Miracle Rally at the Friends Meeting House in London 5th-6th June
(see enclosed flier). Each year more people come, and last year
1000 people attended the weekend, and 1200 came for the Catholic
Miracle Service on the Saturday night. Among the speakers this
year, are a Tanzanian layman, who used to be an armed robber,
but now is the chairman of the Tanzanian NSC and Michelle Moran,
the chairwoman of the English NSC, and ICCRS president, as well
as Damian himself. Damian commented, I believe we are in
a whole new season where God is pouring out his Spirit generously
in miracles and bringing people into spiritual healing and conversion.
The weekend, he says is a time of refreshing for those involved
in CCR and for outpouring of the Holy Spirit for newcomers. For
details see flier or contact Cor Lumen Christi 01932 565747.
