BACKGROUND: Born 23rd April 1930 in Gibraltar. Studied at Cambridge University and Venerable English College, Rome. Curate in Earlsfield then Walworth parishes, South London (1959-63); Lecturer in theology at Beda College, Rome (1963-66); Secretary and Chancellor, Arundel and Brighton diocese (1966-70); Co-adjutor Bishop Arundel and Brighton (1970-71); Bishop of Arundel and Brighton (1971-77); Archbishop of Southwark (1977 -)

SPECIAL AEAS OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR BISHOPS' CONEFRENCE: Chairman for committee of Catechetics; chairman of Department of Christian Life and Worship; Chairman of Marriage and Family Life; Co-Chairman of World Methodist/Roman Catholic Committee (and others)
