Papal Honour for Charles Whitehead
Congratulation
to Charles Whitehead, the chairman of the English National Service
Committee who has been awarded a papal knighthood by Pope John
Paul II for his work for the Church. He is now a knight of the
Order of St Gregory the Great. The award was presented to him
by the bishop of Northampton, Bishop Kevin McDonald.
Congratulations to Goodnews office volunteer
John Edwards, who is has been accepted for diaconate training.
John who was forced to stop work for British Telecom some years
ago when he became ill with leukemia, has been working part
time for Goodnews since 1996. His condition was diagnosed as
terminal. Last year, however, he was put on a special trial
drug that has stabilised his condition so much that he is taking
on the challenge of the diaconate, something he has been thinking
of for some time. His wife Ann, who was a Unitarian minister,
this summer decided to become a Roman Catholic and has gone
straight onto the training for deacon's wives.
MYLES DEMPSEY HEALTH
People
will be glad to hear that Myles Dempsey who was struck down
with a painful attack just before the New Dawn Conference came
out of hospital at the end of September. At first doctors couldn't
work out what was wrong and he needed strong medication to help
with the pain. It turned out to be a gall stone that had got
into the bile duct and had caused terrible problems to the pancreatic
system and liver causing huge weight loss. Myles comments, "I
told the doctor when I went in that I was due to speak in Africa
in a week's time. He told me that I wasn't going anywhere. At
that moment God gave me the grace to hand everything over to
him and I accepted the situation. It was a time of desolation
and nothing seemed to give me comfort. But on a spiritual level
it was like a retreat and I was never more conscious of God
as Father and I had a new revelation of the Fatherhood of God."
"It has changed me," he said.
