THE OTHER HALF

the other half

Sue Whitehead I Do you have friends whose children are all swans? You know , the story of the Ugly Duckling I - how the very ugly "duckling" grows up and becomes a beautiful white, elegant swan? I know that most proud parents see their children in the same way - "My ; child is fantastic" is our cry! And I that is absolutely right.

The crux of the matter for me is - the chick (in the story) never was 1 a duckling! It always was a swan and a cygnet doesn't look anything like a duckling - so, of course, it appeared ugly to the ducks.

Not being accepted by those around us, because we are different, probably happens to most of us at some stage in our lives. It even happens because we are Christians in a world which is becoming more and more secular. And that is how it should be - just "being" should make us stand out because we are NOT the same. We are growing all the time - naturally maturing - changing - becoming more beautiful because we are fulfilling our potential as we grow more like the One who made us.

And the day will come when those around us will recognise us for who we really are and be amazed. Not just our fellow "swans" but the "ducks" as well -all those who have teased, persecuted and rejected us - their eyes will be opened and they'll see us as we really are. For we are what we are - children of God. Isn't that incredible? We can't help it, but we are going to grow more and more beautiful!

And our Father in heaven will look at us with joy. In fact, He's looking quite joyful already because He is thinking - "Others might say they're 'ugly ducklings' but I know they're not - just you wait and see! They're fantastic!!"
