Prayer Tips

cartoonAt one time I lived in a flat that had lots of floors. The phone was at the bottom of the house and I had about three flights of stairs to run down to answer it. It was the bane of my life as, although I would rush down, I would often be too late and in those days there was no way of knowing who had called. It was very frustrating. I was sharing this with my spiritual director at the time, Fr Jim McManus, a wise Redemptorist.

He shared with me a similar story and how he had turned the situation into a blessing. He was studying in Rome and his bedroom was just next to the telephone for the landing of the seminary where he was living. This meant it fell to him to answer the phone, and see whom it was for. It usually wasn’t for him and thus it would mean a walk down the corridor to whoever had been asked for, and if they weren’t in, returning to take a message for them. As he was studying, this became very annoying, as it seemed he was being constantly interrupted in his work. Then he had an inspiration. Every time the phone rang, he would think of it as the Lord calling him for a chat and would go into prayer mode. As he walked to the phone he would pray for the person ringing. Then as he walked down the landing he would pray for the recipient of the call, and so on. This once annoying situation, he said, became the greatest blessing of his time in Rome.

I took his example to heart and started doing the same myself. I didn’t necessarily get to answer more phone calls, but it became a small way that I could punctuate my day with thoughts of God and stop myself getting too engrossed with my work. And I was much less frustrated!
