THE OTHER HALF

the other half

Sue Whitehead There's a beautiful pink flower that grows beside many of our roads. It's tall and elegant and there are generally a lot of them. I know that lots of you might say, "I know them - they're weeds!" Well, yes they are by a gardener's definition, but I like them. When I was about seven years old I passed a bank of these delightful flowers and I gathered a wonderful bouquet for my mother. It was so big that I could hardly carry it (the flowers were almost as tall as I was) and I presented it to her with a huge smile.

It was years before I discovered that they were weeds! My mother accepted the bunch as if they were the rarest hot-house plants that had ever grown. She put them in her best vase, in pride of place in the hall so that all who came would see and admire them. At no time did I realise that in many people's eyes they were worthless. You see - she knew my heart! She recognised that it was a gift of love, an impetuous gesture of a child.

I'm still not getting it right - but now I'm getting it wrong with God! I am consoled that it is my heart's condition which is of prime importance to Him, but it would be nice to get it right as well. Looking back I realise that as I grew older I absorbed the rights and wrongs in life as I listened and leamt. I do hope that I'm doing the same in my spiritual walk - learning what are weeds and what are things of value. Above all, still making generous gestures from a heart of love - the important thing is to keep giving the bouquets.
