Healing the Wounds of History

A special Goodnews publication by Fr Peter Hocken

Eileen O'KaneRepentance is key for reconciliation and healing between individuals. What does one do, however, when it is a question of institutional sin, deep seated prejudices, racism, or wrong doing that may have been done by a nation, group or even by individuals representing the Church many years ago? Worse still, what if the resulting bad memories are keeping people in bondage to the past and stopping them hearing the gospel message today?

Over the last 20 years or so, in an effort to counter this, there have been various Christian initiatives for reconciliation. Pope John Paul II has played a particularly significant rote in this. To help us reflect on this area Fr Peter Hocken, an eminent historian, has produced a thought provoking and fascinating paper. In it he looks at the whole area of Repentance for the sins of the past and the significance of the Purification of Memories. He also gives some practical advice on how people might get involved in this. The paper has important insights both for world peace and in preparing the ground if effective world evangelisation is to take place.
