Some
years ago I visited one of the Beatitude communities in Italy, where
one my friends was a member. The Beatitudes is a monastic community
and they try to bring a sense of the sacred into every area of life.
In the kitchen they had a small icon, and I noticed that every time
someone came into the kitchen to work, they would light a small candle
in front of the icon, as a way of consecrating what they were doing
to God. I thought it was such a beautiful tradition that when I came
home, I put a small icon of Rublev's Trinity that I have, in my kitchen,
and every time I do some cooking or spend a lengthy time in the kitchen,
I too, light a candle. This little ritual helps me to realise that
everything I do is under God's eye and I can give it to Him, even
if I'm not consciously thinking about Him all the time.
Others obviously feel the same way, because I've noticed that at
Allen Hall, where I work, Mary, one of the secretaries, often has
a small candle burning on her desk as she works away at her typing
and administrative duties. It always encourages me and makes me smile
when I see it, because I know why she does it.
