Prayer Tip

By Kristina Cooper

CartoonWe often need signs and symbols to remind us of our faith and our commitment to God. These don't necessarily have to be overt to others, but can be simply reminders to ourselves about what we believe.

I was very touched to read, for example, that Catherine de Hueck Doherty who was the founder of Madonna House, in Canada and a great mystic, writer and social reformer, always used to paint the front door of whatever house she lived in, blue, as a sign of her consecration to Our Lady. One of her books, which is worth getting hold of, is even called "The Blue Door Stories" and tells of some of the miraculous examples of God's Divine Providence that happened to her over the years.

I haven't done it yet, but I fully intend to paint my front door blue too. Given the popularity of the rosaries that I give away to the teenagers on my estate I am also thinking of putting up a grotto to Our Lady in the little bit of garden I have. It could be a bit of a risk, given the graffiti that is endemic in the area, but I'm sure it will arouse more interest than the usual garden gnomes. I just need to get the right statue!
