THE DA VINCI CODE
Dan Brown's best selling novel "The Da Vinci Code"
with its authoritative tone and claims of cover ups by the
Catholic Church, has created all kinds of confusion in its
wake, even among believing Catholics. In response to this,
Fr Mike Gwinnell, a former member of the NSC in England, has
published a small pamphlet, entitled "The Da Vinci Code",
in which he tackles several of the of the points raised by
the book, focussing particularly on the sequential order and
validity of the gospels. Those interested in a copy should
send 4 first class stamps to the Goodnews office( Allen Hall,
28 Beaufort Street, London SW3 5AA) with their name and address.
ELIZABETH WANG
A new online Art Gallery has been launched which shows over
200 paintings by Catholic artist Elizabeth Wagt. If you click
on www.radiantlight.org.uk/art
you will be able to see 15 exhibitions on subjects such as
prayer, the love of God, the Mass, the Rosary, the call to
holiness etc . Elizabeth's paintings have already touched
many people with their vivid colours and inspiring themes.
She has exhibited at the Royal Academy, and the Royal Institute
of Painters in Watercolours and has had solo exhibitions.
We have featured some of her work in Goodnews, and used them
for covers for the magazine.
There is currently an exhibition of her work at the French
Church in Leicester Square which will last until 5th September
2005. On 9th July 2pm-3.30pm there will be a talk by Fr Anthony
Doe about Christian Prayer in everyday life and Elizabeth
will be giving a meditation on the exhibition pictures.
LIFE OF ST FRANCIS - OLD CLASSIC RE-ISSUED ON DVD
Picked by the Vatican as one of the greatest films ever released
on the spiritual life, Roberto Rossellini's classic 1950 film,
"Francesco giullare di Dio" (Francis, God's Jester)
has just been released by Eureka videos in their Masters of
Cinema Series. Jonathan Lomax the assistant producer on the
DVD, who is not a Christian said, he had watched the film
seven times and had been totally charmed by its innocence
and power, which made him determined to make it available
to a wider audience. He commented, "To me the very best
films of the 20th and 21st century have some kind of spiritual
message". Accompanying the DVD is an appreciation by
Martin Scorsese, who is also a great fan of the film. The
film, which is in black and white (with optional subtitles
in English), is shot in neo realist manner with non professional
actors (including thirteen real Franciscan monks). This gives
it a wonderful genuine quality, where the actual spirit of
Francis is captured. There are also some hilarious characters
- particularly brother Juniper, who is rather simple but very
generous, and who is getting into scrapes because of this.
The DVD is available in HMV stores and other outlets, and
through Amazon priced at £19.99
