The Other Half

The Other Half

I do a lot of cross-stitch embroidery. It gives me great pleasure and as it is often for a greeting card for a special occasion, I hope it pleases others too. I always take a project with me on aeroplane journeys and I usually do some while listening to Charles speaking as it keeps me awake. Only joking!!

To start with there is just a blank piece of material and I have to concentrate quite hard to count the stitches and put the right colours in their places. Sometimes I go wrong and find that I have to unpick several minutes' work which is very annoying but essential to get the desired result. I keep the necessary silks on a work card - all sorted and cut to the length required. Recently I left my card on the aeroplane - in the pocket of the seat in front!

This is extremely annoying as I now have to reorganise my sewing basket and see if I can find the right colours to continue with my work. Having just looked in the basket I decided to write this instead, as the sort will take ages - there is such a large selection of old silks; not neatly tied to cards but tangled and messy. Life's a bit like that, isn't it? God starts by giving us a beautiful clean sheet and we start the pattern. Sometimes we make mistakes and we really need to sort those out if we can. And sometimes we lose the plot completely and are thrown back on choosing a second best option. It'll be alright - but it won't be the best.

But I remember when our children used to bring their sewing attempts back from school. We still have them all - some are visible all year and some appear at Christmas time for the tree. And I love them - mistakes and all. So is it SO bad if we go wrong? I think our Father recognises our desire to do it right, and He already knows about our inability to be perfect!

I shall finish the task ahead - sorting, cutting and sewing. Someone I know and love is waiting for a card. They will have no idea that I've done it wrong - come to think of it - it will be an original! Maybe that's how God sees us - each life is an original made up of mistakes, second choices and hard work. That's not so bad - I think I can carry on now - the important thing is not to give up!
