From the Editor's Desk

Kristina CooperSummer is wonderful fur its time of relaxation and spiritual refreshment, particularly if you have been able to attend one of the wonderful summer charismatic conferences thai take place round the country. More and mure people seem to be drawn to them, and they are a great way of opening people up to the riches of the charismatic renewal and what baptism in the spirit means when it is lived in all its fullness. Autumn, however, has its own delights and opportunities. It is often the time when we decide to start new courses and activities in our parishes. May I especially recommend the new Youth CAFE video, "Plugged In" which June Palmer, tells us about on page 12. This is a stunning video/dvd resource for teenagers to help them understand their Catholic Faith produced by David Payne and the talented team at Catholic Evangelisation Services and which features testimonies by John Pridmore and the Suulh London rap group UGC.

At the end of June we had the much awaited Newman Consultation, which gathered together leaders from the northern isles - England, Ireland. Scotland and Wales - looking at the way forward for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Dymphna Sheehan, a former Irish NSC chairperson, gives an enthusiastic report of the gathering while I reflect on what I feel the Holy Spirit said through the whole process. Readers also have an opportunity to hear part of Archbishop Kevin McDonald's talk to the consultation, where he tells us how we can best serve the wider Church. This is just the beginning, as Jt will take a long time to unpack all that we received and in the coming issues, there will be more feedback and reflections from others who were there, as we try and discern the way forward-In this issue too, with Halloween coming up, we look at the whole area of the supernatural and psychic in Fr Pal Collin's article "Things that Go Bump in the Night". On a practical level why not take up Cor et Lumen Christi Community's idea of organising a Night of Light as an alternative to the usual Halloween celebrations (see page 9). In her article Teresa Davies reflects on Ephesians 6 and the call to put on the armour of God, which she explains is to grow in holiness. The importance of really living the Word of God is emphasised in Pauline McDougall's article on the Agape page. This is further illustrated in another article by Fr Pat Collins when he shares

how wrestling with the Word of God, led him to step out in faith and to pray for healing for one of his pupils. The power of prayer to bring about healing is further underlined in the amazing story by Madcleline O'Connell whose daughter was miraculously healed of Hemoraghic Dengue Fever several years ago.

Charismatic Renewal has helped many to increase their faith in the power of prayer and never was this needed more than now, with the fear and uncertainty that the recent terrorist bombings have created in our nation. In Good News we lend to focus on the upbuilding things that God is doing, but God also speaks through difficult things too and we need equally to hear his voice in this, and I reflect on what I feel He is saying to us at this time. Prayer groups will be needed more than ever and Spiro Sucref from Wales tells the encouraging story of how even though his prayer group dropped to one person, he hung on in and it is now flourishing once again.

The media is a powerful tool in forming minds and hearts and Barbara Nicolosi explains how ACT ONE, a school for Christian script writers and executives, is helping prepare Christians to work in Hollywood.

On the news pages there are reports of some of the other conference;-, that have taken place recently. specially the Signs and Wonders conference in London in July and the Athlone conference in Ireland. Pope Benedict XVI has called all those in the movements to come to Rome next year for a special Pentecost vigil, so what about it? Keep an eye open in future issues of Goodnews for more details.
