Advent Messengers' Ring

(Four biblical 'messengers' bring us the Good News)

Mary Taylor begins a new series in which she shares craft ideas to help children appreciate their Christian faith

Here's a variation on the traditional Advent wreath - it could be used by a family at home, a children's liturgy group or by a class at school.

You will need:
A metal tray
Pebbles
4 cylindrical glasses (at least 15cm / 6" tall)
4 candles (twice as tall as glasses)
Sand stiff card
Glue felt tip pens
Scraps of felt / fabric / wool / wrapping paper

First: assemble the ring:
Place the glasses around the tray and fill each with a little sand. Put the candles in the glasses and tip in some sand around the sides to make them stay upright.
Cover the tray with sand and arrange pebbles around the edge to represent 'making a pathway for the Lord'.

Next: Make the messengers:
Cut out four card 'praising people' shapes (see illustration) and decorate to represent Isaiah, John the Baptist, Mary and an angel. ( Chance for some interesting discussion here! ) For safety reasons the figures should be shorter than the glasses.

Then: attach each figure to a glass:
Cut a 5cm x 12.5cm (2" x 5") strip of card and bend around a glass, flattening both ends so that it can be glued to the back of the figure. Adjust to fit, so that when dry, each figure can be slipped over the top of a candle / glass.

Now make a 'message' for each figure to carry.
Cut out four banner shapes (see illustration).

Use felt tips to decorate and write messages (Isaiah) 'Prepare the way!', (John the Baptist) 'Turn back to God!' (Mary) 'Yes!', (Angel) 'Glory to God!'
Glue banners to the hands of each figure.

During Advent light candles in order each week, sing an Advent song (e.g. 'We are waiting to welcome Jesus' - Bernadette Farrell) and read the relevant scripture passage together.

Isaiah 62:10-12
John the Baptist - Mark 1:1-8
Mary - Luke 1:26-38
Angel - Luke 2:8-20

NB As always with candles, safety first!
Adult supervision is required.
(As candles burn down with use, you can add more sand to the glasses to make them taller again.)
