Pass It On:

Candle Hats

An activity for Candlemas - Feast of the Presentation 2nd February

Mary Taylor continues in a new series in which she shares craft ideas to help children appreciate their Christian faith

If children are experiencing "post-Christmas blues", help them to share the Good News that Simeon and Anna had been waiting for: Jesus lights up the world.

You will need ( for each child)
A strip of black card approx 70 x 12 cm
A4 sheet white paper
Gold/silver/red foil pieces
Gold or silver felt tip pen
Stapler
Glue stick
White pencil or chalk

FIRST: Cut strip of black card to fit the child's head, and mark the overlap so that you don't decorate over it, but don't staple it yet. Find and mark the centre front of card strip. (Candle to be attached here).

NEXT: Children cut 1.5cm squares of foil and stick these along the edges of the card strip, mosaic style, to decorate it. Help them to write a scripture message along the middle of the card, using white/pencil/chalk (Avoid the marked centre front). They can then go over this with gold/silver pencils.

SUITABLE SCRIPTURE

1 - "Let there be light!" (Genesis 1:3)
2 - "The Lord is my light!" (Psalm 27.1)
3 - "The light of the nations" (Luke 2:32)
4 - "Let your light shine!" (Matthew 4:16)
5 - "Rise and shine" (Isaiah 60:1)
6 - "Walk in the light!" (Isaiah 2:5)
7 - "Christ will shine on you!" (Ephesians 5:14)
8 - "God is light" (1 John 1:5)
9 - "Light of the world" (John 8:12)
10 - "Children of light!" (Luke 16:8)

NOW: Make candle by rolling up the white paper (from the short side) and glueing it along the edge. Cut a flame-shaped piece of gold foil, and stick a smaller shape, cut from red foil, inside it. Glue this to the inside of the candle at the top. Place the stapler inside the base of the candle, and staple it to the centre front of the card strip.

FINALLY: Staple the candle hat together, and it is ready to wear to a liturgy or a special meal. Maybe the children could "announce" the Good News message written on their hats at a suitable moment.
