The Other Half

The Other Half

A really nice thing happened to me the other day. I was paying for my shopping at the checkout when the young lady cashier said "What beautiful nails you have."

Now that might not sound amazing to lots of you but it made my day. I do NOT have the most wonderful nails! They are generally very brittle and split or break at the slightest bump. There are no half moons and my desire is only to keep them clean and unobtrusive so I rarely put nail varnish on them. That day they were clean, slightly longer than usual and reasonably well shaped as I had had some spare time the previous day, tried out a new nail file and put some nail -strengthening varnish on them All in all - they were OK. Her nails, by comparison, were well manicured and amazingly painted with the latest fashion style - she was obviously nail-aware!!

When I was growing up I did not have a great opinion of my own appearance. In those days it was desirable (for young girls) to be curvaceous not stick-thin as I was! That became fashionable just after I became pregnant and developed curves for the first time. I've already mentioned my nails and my general appearance was nothing to write home about, so I must confess that I did not think of myself as the most attractive of young ladies.

One school day I was playing hockey and my immediate opponent was a slightly older girl who I knew vaguely. She suddenly turned to me and said, "You have the most amazing navy-blue eyes, you know." Well, that was truly a life changing moment for me. In the evening I looked in the mirror and thought that she might be right - and if I hadn't noticed them before, maybe there were other things about me which were also OK. I certainly thought of myself differently after that day.
