May HenryThe Power of Praise

May Henry, who is in her late 70s, and was a member of the healing team of Cockfosters prayer group for 30 years, shares an amazing testimony of the power of the Word of God when she was confronted by a burglar in her home.

I am a person of prayer and in my retirement years have plenty of time for it. I particularly love the psalms and the Lord has planted a number of them in my heart. I have found that all our emotions and needs are addressed there. Being the Word of God, they are full of power, as God’s word is always creative. When we proclaim it, the Lord does it.

I was mugged a couple of years ago and this knocked my confidence. This, and my declining health, has meant that I can’t get to the prayer group at Cockfosters any more, although once a month I run an ecumenical Mothers’ Prayers group in my home. For some time now, however, it has been my habit to pray for protection before I go to bed. I use Psalm 27 – “The Lord is my Light and my Salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life before whom shall I be afraid?…..when the wicked – even my enemies come upon me to devour me, they stumble and fall …” Some weeks ago I was to experience in a very special way how powerful these words were.

I live in a large house but I usually have company. This particular night, however, I was alone. At 3.30 am I was awakened by banging noises and I wondered who could be in my house? So I opened my bedroom door and was confronted by a tall young man running along the hall towards me with an iron cosh held high. I was petrified. “My God, my God,” I thought and I froze to the spot. He continued advancing and when he saw me an extraordinary thing happened. He started to roar in sheer terror and with his arms protecting his head, he bent back, as if he was under attack. Then he turned and ran back, still roaring, out through, two back doors, which he had broken down in his entry. And then he vanished into the night. All I could think of were the Lord’s wonderful words “Our enemies - they stumble and fall”. How wonderful is God’s Word, when we make it our home.

Afterwards I dialled 999 and the police arrived within minutes. They stayed with me some hours and made my place safe again. Amazingly nothing had been stolen. The Lord had truly protected me, as the psalm says, in a most amazing way. All praise and thanks to our wonderful Saviour.
