Be a film director on the Halleluja Channel!

Mary Taylor shares an imaginative idea for children to do this Lent

The children may have heard of the film "The Passion of the Christ". As Lent progresses, think about the events of Holy Week together: (Matt 21 & 26-28)

Palm Sunday; Last Supper; Gethsemane; Trial, Good Friday; Easter Sunday

Ask the children to illustrate each event on A4 paper (picture should be drawn inside a square 18cm by 18 cm in the centre) - if several children are involved, each can choose a different aspect of the event. Captions can be added, or speech bubbles for dialogue, and children may like to record a sound track to accompany the film.

Attach finished pictures to the "film" in the TV, and arrange a showing for Easter Sunday!

You will need:
Cardboard box with base 38cm x 38cm, glue stick, Scissors, ruler, two rolls of sturdy wrapping paper, A4 drawing paper, pencils, short strip of Velcro fastener, felt tip pens, craft knife.

Make the TV: cut the flaps off the box and decorate it by gluing wrapping paper over it. (Draw around each side of the box in order to cut out accurate shapes to fit.) Now cut a square hole 18x18 cm in the centre of the base, using the craft knife (this will become the "screen").

Make slots for the two film rollers: on one side of the
TV, measure 5 cm down from the top and 5 cm from the front edge and make this point. Now, starting from the back edge of the TV, cut a straight slot just wide enough to allow the tube to rotate freely. Repeat procedure on the opposite side of the TV, and then again at the bottom edge (four slots).

Make removable holding strips: cut 4 card strips 38cm x 3cm from box flaps. Cut six 2 x 2cm Velcro squares and glue them to the top, middle and bottom of each card strip. Then glue the outer sides of the Velcro squares to corresponding places on the back edges of the sides of the TV.

Make film rollers: remove both rolls of wrapping paper from their rolls. Cut one of the rolls in half all the way along its length, and reattach one half with glue to the middle of its tube. Roll the paper up again around the tube. Next attach the other half of the paper roll to the bottom edge of the first half with glue, and continue rolling. Then attach the bottom edge of the second roll to the middle of the other empty tube.
Leaving a length of paper approximately 18 cm between the two tubes, fit them into the slots in the sides of the TV, with the fully rolled tube at the bottom. Now fix the two holding strips in place, and check that the tubes revolve properly. (The "film" can now be removed each time a new picture is ready.)

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Then come three pics...
