PENTECOST CONFERENCE
IN SOUTHPORT

The Northern Catholic Conference which took place for the first time last year at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool, will happen again this year, but will be held at the Floral Hall complex in Southport over Pentecost weekend (Friday evening to Sunday 2nd-4th June 2006). Participants can travel in daily or stay at the very many bed and breakfasts and hotels in the area, as Southport is a popular seaside resort. As last year there will be something for all the family, including a cr?che, a programme for primary school children run by the Sion Community, and one for the secondary school age group run by St Patrick’s Community from Ireland, headed up by John Pridmore, the ex-gangster, who now spends his life doing youth work and parish missions.

The theme of the conference will be “Springtime” and the programme a mixture of talks, workshops, celebration of the Eucharist, healing service and special comedy cabaret, with a surprise guest artist. Last year northern comics, Jimmy Cricket, the father of Frankie Mulgrew, one of the main organisers and Don McLean, from Radio Two, topped the bill. The main speakers will be the same as last year and include scripture teacher, Frances Hogan, Fr Jimmy Collins, Lord David Alton, John Pridmore and mime artist, Steve Murray. New to this year’s line-up are Myles Dempsey and Fr Stan Fortuna CFR. The organisers also expect that some participants might want to come early so they can attend Fr Jimmy Collins’ huge annual healing service at Liverpool Cathedral on Thursday 1st June, where 2500 people are expected. WALKIN HOPE CONFERENCE MOVES TO THE INNER CITY

“Walkin’ Hope, another of the newer Catholic Charismatic family conferences, based in the North East, is now going into its third year. For the last two years it has been held at Minsteracres Retreat centre near Consett, but this year, the organisers have felt called to move the conference to Blackfriars Hall in the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, so it will be more accessible to those who don’t have cars and who will be travelling by public transport. It will now also take place earlier in the year, over the second weekend in May (13th-14th )2006, and will be non-residential.

The format will be similar to before, drawing on many of the same contributors as last year. Fr Stan Fortuna CFR, the rapping Franciscan from the Bronx, who was the inspiration for the conference, will again be coming. Music will be by Inner Sanctum led by Mike Mulroy. Other speakers include Canon John Redford and Fr Richard Conrad, both from the Maryvale Institute, David Payne and mime artist Steve Murray will also be there as well as the Hope Youth Team. There will be a full minstry for children and teens. For details visit website: www.walkinhope.org.uk

NEW HOTEL LOCATION FOR BIRMINGHAM CONFERENCE!

The very popular annual Birmingham Catholic Charismatic Conference, which has been held for 18 years at Newman College of Education, will this summer be held at the Paragon Hotel in the centre of Birmingham near New Street railway station. The dates have also slightly shifted and the conference will begin on Thursday 10th August and finish on Monday 14th August 2006.The main speakers are Patti Gallagher Mansfield from the USA, who was at the seminal weekend that is seen as the beginning of the CCR in the Catholic Church, Charles Whitehead, David Matthews, Ros Powell and Fr Bill Keogh.

The move is because of renovations happening at Newman, but the organisers feel God could be using this to bring a new element to the conference, particularly by bringing it to the city centre. The conference will have the sole use of the hotel during the conference and have got a very good price for the facilities. Substantial deposits are needed, however, and some of the conference regulars have paid their fees already to help with this. The organisers are asking others hoping to come to book as early as they can to help with the organisation of the conference at this new venue.
