CartoonPicture Psalm Box

Mary Taylor shares an imaginative idea for children to remember the blessings of their summer holidays.

Help the children to appreciate the wonder of God's creation and the beauty of the psalms.

Begin by going for a walk and collecting as many natural materials as possible (without damaging the environment!) - small leaves, flower petals, pebbles, twigs etc. At home, share together one of the psalms which praises God's creation, and choose one sentence or phrase to illustrate.

Possible Psalms

- 85: 11 The Lord is like a sun, shining on the universe.
- 97: 1 Let the earth be happy.
- 72: 3 Let all the islands sing, and the mountains bring peace.
- 65: 9 You visited the earth and watered it.
- 65: 10 You blessed the little seeds, springing above the soil.
-65: 13 And the fields will also sing in happiness.
- 36: 6 Your love is like a great mountain.
[all examples taken from Sing New Song by Bijou Le Tord - Eerdmans Books]

You will need [for each child]

- A cereal box
- Newspaper
- String
- Sheet of sky blue sugar paper
- Marvin glue & brush
- Felt tip pens
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Chalk
- Cotton wool
- A4 sheet of card
- Sticky tape
- Collection of natural materials
- Scraps of foil, tissue, crepe paper

First: "Your love is like a great mountain". Fill the cereal box with newspaper to keep it firm, & secure it with sticky tape. Draw around the box, cut pieces of the sugar paper to fit the top and sides, and stick down with the glue stick.

Next: Help the children use the chalk to design an expression of 'God's creation' - a garden, a seaside or mountain scene etc., depending on your chosen text, and where your walk took place! Glue on the scraps and natural materials to create the scene - foil for a river, twigs for trees, cotton wool clouds, petals and leaves for flowers etc. Preserve the finished scene by covering the whole picture with a glaze made of glue and water.

Finally: Write the chosen text in felt tip pens on the sheet of card. Attach a loop of string to the top of the card with sticky tape, and then stick the loop to the back of the box so that the text hangs down beneath it. Attach another string loop to the top of the box at the back, so that it can be hung on the wall.

Leave the picture box to dry overnight before attempting to hang it up!
