Today at Sunday Mass we still recite the Nicene Creed formulated by two Councils of the Church in the 4th century. When we recite the Creed together we are standing as one body stating our shared beliefs. The Creed is prayed by millions of believers throughout the Body of Christ, every week, Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox alike because in our basic beliefs we have so much in common. What an amazing gift it is, an anchor for our faith, not just a formula to recite like robots but a declaration of eternal truths that satisfy our deepest longings for Truth, Justice, Beauty and Hope. Pope Benedict says that each of us has an innate and irrepressible desire for knowledge and truth. (Excerpt from the introduction to the new CaFE course Believe Reflections on the Creed) This exciting project is a new venture for us. We wanted to produce an evangelistic resource that would bring alive the words of the Creed in a modern and fresh way. So, rather than using one speaker throughout we approached a number of well-known men and women of faith and invited them to share their views and insights into the different elements of the Creed. We were both surprised and very delighted when most of those approached said that they would be willing to be interviewed. David Payne, the narrator of the series and a camera team spent six months travelling around the country filming these interviews and other testimonies from lay people at the Celebrate Conference and one of the Mens Weekends. In the summer they travelled to Rome, Turkey and the Holy Land to film at significant locations which give some very stunning and interesting back drops to the teaching. The result is a beautifully filmed exposition of the Gospel message with personal testimonies and practical insights. Fr Christopher Jamison, Abbot of Worth says in the first talk, Human beings all need God. We all need to take time to be still and in that stillness we will find God or rather God will find us. Even just taking five minutes of stillness at the beginning and the end of each day can have a transforming effect on our lives. With these periods of quiet contemplation surrounding our day the picture of our life will look very different.
