DAMIAN STAYNE BRINGS THE CHARISM SCHOOL TO THE USA

Last summer Damian Stayne, the founder of the Cor et Lumen Christi community went with his family to the United States for seven weeks, where he ran a series of Charism schools and Catholic miracle rallies at various locations including the Franciscan University at Steubenville. Over 4200 people attended the different events and more than 500 people proclaimed themselves physically healed. The majority of those who attended the Charism Schools also exercised Gifts of the Spirit for the first time. Many people also gave their lives to Jesus or were baptised in the Holy Spirit or filled anew and several hundred people experienced deliverance at various levels.

Damian at Steubenville

Damian commented: “After each event we had follow up sessions with the leaders so they could put into place a strategy to move forward with what they had been taught and experienced.” Among the healings at the Miracle Service, which was part of the Cor et Lumen Christi Word Power conference, hosted by The Mother of God Community in Gaithersburg, a Vietnamese woman got up and walked from her wheelchair. Another woman who had been on crutches was also able to run round the hall. As a result of the visit the Mother of God Community have now started a regular healing service themselves. Eleven hundred people from 36 States attended the Charism School at the Franciscan University in Steubenville.

Damian comments, “In the prophecy workshop, 900 people who had never had a word of knowledge before, received one as they were encouraged to pray for people they didn’t know in the session. They were ‘over the moon’”. For the Miracle Service Damian insisted that people in need be invited from the local area. Thus a Protestant pastor who works with prostitutes and people on the streets brought some of his people. There were more than 250 declared healings, included 12 people with hearing aids, who after prayer no longer needed them. Fr Michael Scanlan TOR, one of the pioneering leaders of the CCR, and the Chancellor of the Franciscan University was so amazed by what he saw that he said that if he hadn’t known many of the people who had been healed he would have suspected that there had been a set up.

One of the participants who co-ordinates the university Christian outreaches, was so struck by what he saw that he asked Damian if he could use the prophecy workshop material in Jamaica where he had been invited to speak. He emailed later to say that he saw exactly the same thing happen there where 200 people received words of knowledge for the first time. He also led a healing service for the first time by himself and was amazed to see the Lord perform many physical healings. Damian also led Charism Schools and Catholic Miracle rallies in Phoenix and San Diego, where there were more remarkable healings, including one lady who had been stone deaf in one ear for 48 years who instantly regained her hearing. Damian remembers, “She wept with gratitude. It was very moving.” May God be praised.

PREPARING AN ARMY FOR THE LORD
Report the European meeting of Catholic Charismatic leaders organised by ICCRS in Budapest 5th-8th November 2009

Thirty European countries were represented at the European leaders gathering of CCR in Budapest. For the first time there were representatives from Albania, Denmark and Iceland and a considerable amount of young leaders. England, Scotland and Wales all sent delegates. Speakers included Prof Guzman Carriquiry, the under secretary of the Pontifical Council of the Laity, Michelle Moran (UK), Johannes Ficthtenbauer (Austria), Jude Muscat(Malta) and Lazlo Gorove (Hungary). The participants were told that Catholic Charismatic Renewal, like the other Ecclesial movements, enjoyed high esteem at the Vatican and is seen to have an important role in the promotion of the gospel at this time. There was a sense of urgency among those gathered but also a recognition that many felt overworked and unsupported. One of the prophecies encouraged those present to look behind the mountain of ashes which seemed so high.

Leaders Meeting in Budapest

One of the priorities that was underlined was the importance of making time for others, particularly young people and the importance of training young people up and not working alone but creating teams to do the Lord’s work. The significance of intercession was also highlighted as a back up every ministry. There was a stress on the preparation of a spiritual army and the individual’s part in this even if it did not seem very spectacular. Also emphasised was making use of the rich tradition of the Church and its different spiritualities. In the small group times the talks and other topics were discussed. In my group we discussed the different ways that Baptism in the Holy Spirit was facilitated in the different countries. In Poland for example they have experimented with an individual Life in the Spirit seminar whereby people pray individually every day and come together only for two sessions, which focus on healing prayer and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This is ideal for people who have no prayer group around or for people from groups who cannot run their own.

Other ways of promoting the Baptism in the Spirit included using Philip courses, Alpha courses, big rallies, inner healing retreats, Cana (marriage courses) for couples, Ignatian retreats in connection with healing prayer and baptism in the Holy Spirit, traditional pilgrimages on foot to well known shrines where the teachings offered on the way can prepare pilgrims for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, youth camps and the ICCRS Pentecost of the nations event.

New Signs and Wonders in Wales
by Spiro Sueref

An increasing, and unprecedented, number of travellers are coming to prayer groups in north and south Wales. The Pantasaph prayer group has seen their prayer group grow from around 15 people to over 100, as Arthur Hunter explains: “In early summer 2009, our charismatic group at Pantasaph moved from the conference room to the larger Pilgrims Hall. This coincided with a steady increase in attendance. We have grown from a neat and tidy, comfy and cosy meeting of around fifteen to one of over a hundred, the majority from the travelling community, people of all ages including children. This has presented a new and different challenge but a rewarding one because we are seeing healings take place on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Particularly encouraging is the witness we receive from people after each meeting (especially the men) and their eagerness to be involved.” A similar trend has been seen in the St Peter’s Prayer Group, Cardiff, which I lead myself. We have seen our prayer group increase by around 20, mostly travellers.

For us, it started in November 2008, when following my return with my brother Nicholas from Greece, Craig Fury a Charismatic traveller from North Wales turned up to our prayer group with his wife and another two couples, one from Ledbury and another from Swansea, wanting to be prayed with. Following personal prayer ministry they experienced the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit and a new fervour in their faith and mission. A few months later Fr Keith Windsor, Director of the Pantasaph Franciscan Friary invited me to speak at a weekend retreat at the Friary. Leading up to retreat 20th-22nd November), we saw a sudden increase of travellers and their families coming to the St Peter’s Prayer group in Cardiff, and found that most wanted to come to the Pantasaph retreat, so we hired a minibus and 19 travellers came to the reatreat with us. On the Saturday evening, during the weekend retreat we held an open healing service in conjuction with Fr Keith, Arthur Hunter and the Wrexham Diocesan Service Team. When personal ministry began, after Mass, with the help of the local healing teams, the power of God moved mightily with many healings, signs and wonders. Many testimonies are still being collected and reports still coming in as to the fruits of that weekend. It seems there is a revival starting among the Catholic Travellers at this time which it would be good to support.

If you are also experiencing a growth of travellers coming to your prayer group, please let us know at the Good News Office, Allen Hall, 28 Beaufort Street, Lonson SW3 5AA. Or email ccruk@ onetel.com

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
by Charles Whitehead

The octave of prayer for Christian Unity (18th-25th January) is opportunity to come together with other local churches. We are all familiar with the traditional joint services which are usually held, so why not try something different this time? In my local area we are doing something new for 2010 - joint Prayer Walks by members of all the churches in our parish. How will it work? The parish area will be divided up into 7 Walks, one each day at different times, and each church will take responsibility for organising the Prayer Walk on one day of the week. Details of all the walks will be published in each church, and everyone is encouraged to take part in at least one of the walks. What do we plan to do on the Walks? Simply to start at an agreed location (usually one of the churches), to pray together for a few minutes, and then set off walking quietly along the prescribed route, praying silently for the homes, businesses, shops and people we are passing, asking God’s blessing on them. If the walkers pass a school, hospital, care home, or similar institution, they may choose to pause and pray for it together for a few moments. Each Walk will last one hour, and the Lord may prompt us to pray for specific people or purposes as we walk along. At the end of the week a joint service of thanksgiving and prayer for the whole area will be held at one of the churches, when there will also be an opportunity for people to share about their experiences of Prayer Walking together.

When my wife Sue and I were in San Antonio, Texas, in October, we heard amazing accounts of the changes that were occuring in the parts of the city where local churches were getting together to Prayer Walk every street. When I spoke about this at our regular prayer meeting for the leaders of all our local churches, the suggestion was made that we might do this for our joint activity in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. So we are all very excited about our first experience of bringing the power of God onto our streets in prayer, and expectant that by doing it together we will grow in unity as brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s good to give a public expression to our shared faith in Jesus Christ and to do something new - why not join us and do the same?

Go out and teach!

KateFor the past 2 years the Core team of the Westminster Cathedral Hall prayer group in London has been going out to assist and help with running Days of Renewal and the Life in the Spirit Seminars (LSS) in other prayer groups. This has come about as a result of a series of visions that the Westminster Prayer Group Leader, Kate Moir, has had during her time of prayer. She comments: “I have had now three visions about teaching, and heard the Lord saying “ My Father is sending you His Son. Go and teach.” I felt strongly this vision was for the Westminster team.

GabrieleGabriele Sedda, another Core Team member comments: “Two years ago we helped running a Day of Renewal in Dartford, which was the very first time we went out. Then we did a Parish Healing evening in Orpington. We also helped in running the LSS in a prayer group in Ealing; also at an African prayer group based in Stratford (South London), and a one day LSS in Norwood where Kate, Melvin Ranghel and myself gave the talks and ministered to the over 50 people who attended.

Even the local leaders were amazed by the attendance and by the power God manifested that day. As a result they are have created a charismatic prayer group. Then in November 2009 we were asked to help run a LSS, for the first time, in the Amazing Grace Prayer Group, Tooting (South London). The leaders here felt it was best for the group to combine the 7 sessions in 4 weeks”. We usually recommend to run the 7 weeks LSS course whenever possible, as it is good for the participants to develop a daily prayer habit and to get used to coming to a group regularly; but we also realised that we need to adjust to the needs of the prayer group we are going to help, as we are there to support them, help, equip and encourage them in their ministry. We also help with the praying over and laying of hands and I have to say it has been for us very rewarding and humbling at the same time. The Wesminster Cathedral Hall Prayer Group is running the LSS from the 22nd of January to the 26th of March. For more info please contact Goodnews on 0207 3525298 or email ccruk@ onetel.com

Life in the Spirit Seminar at Pantasaph Friary

The Diocesan Service Teams of Shrewsbury and Wrexham co-operated for the first time together in running a weekend Life in the Spirit Seminar at Pantasaph Friary in North Wales over the last weekend of October 2009. They were invited by Bro Loarne Fergusson OFM Cap, who stipulated that no well known speakers should be invited but that the members of the service teams and local prayer groups should give the talks. The joint team was christened “Shrex” by its members. The event was publicised both at the Friary and through posters to prayer groups in the two dioceses. Members of the team also spoke at local Mass centres to encourage people to come. Initially not many people seemed to respond, but in the end 34 people signed up for the weekend. Terry Dee, one of the team commented, “One or two of us, including myelf were just a tad nervous about undetaking this kind of public speaking role on such an important subject, but as the programme finally got underway, I for one was greatly impressed at the way each topic was addressed by our speakers and their subsequent personal testimonies.” The weekend was a great success.

Team Chertsey Home & Away

Over the last few years James Wilkinson has organised many Life in the Spirit Seminars, mainly in the South East. However, this calling does not usually take him away from our Monday evening prayer group in Chertsey where he is a founder member and a leader. But then, when our neighbours in Ashford (Middlesex) asked him to do the seminars there, the only evenings available were Mondays, the same evening as our prayer group meetings. So, for seven weeks in September and October he was not able to be with us and neither were a number of our regular members whom he had recruited to be group leaders in Ashford. Furthermore, some more of our other members decided they would like to attend the seminars, as they had not yet experienced them, or felt the need for a refresher. The result was that our normal turnout of ten to fifteen was much reduced. In fact, after allowing for existing holiday and family commitments and the odd cold, we numbered as few as four on one occasion and we were never more than six or seven. It seemed important to keep the prayer group going though and we found that there was a special intimacy in having just a few together - which we treasured. We were also able to pray for the success of the seminars as they were taking place. Then, on the first Monday after the seminars were over and the members who had been away “on mission” returned, our reunion, as in a family that has been separated for a time, was warm and loving with much to say and to celebrate. We also met some people who had attended the Ashford seminars and wanted to continue living life in the Spirit by joining us. They were welcome and we were enriched by them. Altogether we numbered twentytwo that evening. We praise God that in all this we were never diminished but, by sending labourers into the vineyard, have harvested new grace and many new blessings.
