Walk On With Hope In Your Heart

Hope is trusting in the God Who keeps His promises, says Hannah Heath.

What is hope?

Recently, I was preparing a talk on the theme “hope”, and honestly, I was a bit scared. Hope is something I had admired from a distance, scared that if I delved into it I would be left confused and disappointed.

However, many long walks, Bible marathons, and YouTube videos later, God started to reveal the reality of hope. Hope isn’t fearful. Hope isn’t weak. Hope isn’t complicated, because Jesus isn’t complicated, and the answer to hope is JESUS.

When He rose from the dead, He won the victory over sin and death forever.

“Joyful in hope”

Hope is trusting God is who He says He is, knowing He is faithful to His promises. As Romans 15:13 says: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

The fruits of hope are joy and peace, and we can step into hope by putting our full trust in Jesus. The joy hope brings isn’t fleeting or fake; it’s a deep, godly joy that lives in our hearts. This joy constantly declares Jesus’ victory, not dependent on either emotion or situation. This hope is not stationary; its nature is to overflow.

As disciples of Jesus, we are people of hope-and, therefore, dealers of hope.

“Patient in affliction”

As we all know, life isn’t always straightforward.

When the pandemic hit, we were all holding onto what little hope we could as we churned out loaves of banana bread, went on our 'Boris' walks, and listened to 7,456 hours of Spotify (or was that just me?)

The good news is that God doesn’t promise a perfect life here on earth-but He does promise to always be with us. Romans 5:3-4 states “Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope."

Endurance is the “capacity to withstand a difficult situation without giving way”. Learning to rely on God for strength allows us to move into a deeper trust, and know Him as our loving Father.

This produces character, which is the “steadiness that doesn’t depend on situation”. Storms will come in life, but our Lord is a water-walker and invites us to walk with Him. As we are refined, we become more and more like our Maker.

This produces hope, because we know our God is faithful to find us in the fire. We know He has a good and perfect plan for us, and that eventually, all will be well.

Hope and God’s faithfulness go hand in hand.

“Faithful in prayer”

Romans 5:5 says: “Hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Our God is love, and we are His beloved. Our hope flows out of receiving His love.

Through prayer, we can experience God’s constant, unfailing love, and within that find hope. Our hope is heaven, where we will have full communion with God, and in prayer, we have a taste of this.

Even when I’m tired and grumpy, when I turn to prayer, God reveals His love to me in new and tender ways and shows me who He is-even in the direst of situations. This is why He calls us to pray not only in response to situations, but also in response to His love, which is constant.

It is through prayer that hope lives in our hearts.

Remember-there is always hope.
